Tetouan is a city ringed by mountains. South of the Martil river rises the limestone massif of Ghorghiz and Bouzitoun; to the east stands Jbel Dersa; to the north, the Haouz mountains. These are the nearest destinations for the city's hikers and its visitors.
Jbel Bouzitoun
Jbel Bouzitoun, at about 1215 metres, is one of the main mountains overlooking Tetouan and one of the most important natural areas nearby, thanks to its height, its geology and its many springs, forests, waterfalls and caves. With Ghorghiz it forms one of the highest summits facing the city.
Jbel Ghorghiz, or Radio Mountain
Jbel Ghorghiz is a limestone massif south of the Martil river, facing the city, covering about 60 square kilometres. Locally it is called Jbel El Idaa, Radio Mountain. Hikers and lovers of panoramic views go there, and many visit in winter. On its slope is Bousmlal, one of the oldest settlements, nicknamed “Charifat Tetouan”.
Jbel Tamim, or Kmim
On the same southern limestone ridge stands Jbel Tamim, also called Jbel Kmim or Sidi Kmim, in Zitoune commune, in the Beni Hozmar lands. Next to it is the village of Yarghit, known as Ezzarqa, for its spring and waterfall.
Jbel Dersa
Jbel Dersa is the mountain most closely tied to the city, one of its great natural and historical landmarks. Malaliyine commune stretches over its eastern and northern slopes, with the villages of Maadel, Assourour and Beni Salem. In detail: the villages of Jbel Dersa.
