Tetouan usually brings to mind its old medina and the sea. Yet the south-east of the province holds a high massif where five peaks top 1650 metres, all in the lands of a single tribe: the Beni Hassan.

Jbel Kelti, the roof of the province

Jbel Kelti is the highest peak of Tetouan province, at about 1926 metres, one of the ten highest in the western Rif and one of the hardest to climb. It lies inside the Tetouan section of Talassemtane National Park. On its northern slope is the village of Tamalout, at about 1100 metres; from the west, the path starts at the hamlet of Adar, the highest settlement in the province. It has its own article: Jbel Kelti from Adar and Tamalout.

Aliouiyine and Hafat Zeltan, the runners-up

Jbel Aliouiyine, sometimes written Alouiyine, comes second at about 1847 metres. It is one of the richest and most beautiful mountains of the province; between it and Kelti lies the village of Iaanen, on the Tasfit river.

Then Jbel Hafat Zeltan, written locally Hafat Jeltan, at about 1821 metres, one of the most striking rocky landmarks of the Beni Hassan. It is only about twenty-six metres lower than Aliouiyine, so the two peaks sit very close in the ranking.

Idmamen and Tellouja

Fourth is Jbel Idmamen, at about 1697 metres, within El Oued commune, one of the largest communes of the province and one of the richest in water.

Fifth is Jbel Tellouja, at about 1681 metres: an imposing white limestone wall, hard to climb, north of the Ouadiyine pass, above the very pass crossed by the western path from Adar to Kelti.

What about the mountains near the city?

The peaks overlooking the city are much lower: Jbel Bouzitoun at about 1215 metres, and Jbel Labyad at about 838 metres, the highest peak of the Haouz mountains. But they are the closest and easiest to reach, and we have gathered them in the mountains overlooking Tetouan.
